The authors compare two methods using Cr2O3 to estimate faecal output in penned sheep: twice daily distribution of lucern pellets containing 12.52 % Cr2O3, and placing in the rumen, at the start of the experiment, an indigestible marker CAPTEC continuous controlled-release capsule. Variation of the marker recovery in faecal output recorded within and between days confirms interest of both distribution methods. However, the controlled-release device has the advantage of being less labour intensive and minimizing the disruptive effect on animals. The practical conditions of the experiment - number of animals, observation periods, sampling dates for analyses - are determined to reduce the number of measurements while limiting estimation errors.
