Sense receptors of the palp of Varroa jacobsoni Oud. (Varroidae, Mesostigmata): SEM observations

The fine morphology of sense receptors of the pedipalp in Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans (Varroidae, Mesostigmata) was studied by scanning electron microscopy. All five segments of the pedipalp bear mechanoreceptor setae with a basal socket. Two sensilla arising from the tibia at its distal end are blunt-tipped and show ceptors that could be be present on the distal part of the tarsus. No olfactory sensilla were observed. The number, distribution and morphology of sensilla are similar in adults and immature forms of both sexes.
