Effects of electric charges on paths of Varroa jacobsoni

Various trajectories of the bee mite Varroa jacobsoni are analyzed by criteria related to velocity, rotation and orientation in the plane. The mite is placed in a circular arena, closed to an electric source standing in the middle of the arena. The movements of Varroa jacobsoni are filmed with a video camera during 50 seconds on average. Subsequently, films are analyzed by means of a real time processing device. The curves, given by the preliminary analysis, are smoothed. Then, the characteristics of path are computerized by home-made programs. The trajectories, obtained under the influence of the lure, bearing negative or positive charge are statistically compared to those of control trajectories, recorded when the lure is uncharged. The differences, observed about several criteria, provide new arguments to discuss the host-parasite relationships in the knowledge of electric charges, which are often present on bees.
