Dynamic irrigation scheduling on freshly tilled soils [field experiments in Belgium, on Hapludalf soil]

A method of updating irrigation scheduling data, based on the changes in equilibrium infiltration rate of a bare tilled soil, was investigated by simulating five 150-minute rain storms applied after every 24 hours, at a constant rate of 70 mm per hour, on tilled and untilled micro-catchments. Regression analysis indicated that decreases in equilibrium infiltration rates (ie) could be predicted by an exponential function which related ie to accumulated rainfall (CR). Such a function can be used for updating irrigation scheduling on freshly tilled soils where significant temporal changes in the infiltration characteristics are most likely to occur as a result of cumulative rainfall impact.
