A model of variance of photosynthesis between leaves and maximization of whole plant photosynthesis

Leaves near the top of a plant canopy are usually more vertically inclined than are leaves near the bottom of the canopy. This pattern of leaf inclination angles is consistent with a strategy of maximization of total plant photosynthetic rate. If photosynthetic characteristics of leaves are constant throughout the canopy, either maximization of total plant photosynthesis or minimization of variance of P predict nearly identical results for leaf inclination angles and P. However, if the value of saturating irradiance increases with decreasing depth in the canopy, differences between the two strategies become apparent.
