Variability in physiological and production characteristics of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) were studied using measurements of light curves of photosynthesis, velocity of dark respiration measured by the gasometric method, the chlorophyll content and growth analysis. High productive (Alta, Triumph) and Medium productive (Lekora, Missouri) cultivars had higher values of photosynthetic rate, mitochondrial respiration, photosynthetic productivity and saturation photosynthetic efficiency and lower values of adaptation photosynthetic efficiency and compensational photosynthetic efficiency than low productive (Ludion, Kentucky) cultivars. Cultivars with the high chlorophyll content (Lekora) and high chlorophyll index had also high velocity of photosynthesis and high biomass production. Results of indices of growth and biomass formation (NAR, CGR, RGR) demonstrated high variability. Comparison of indices detected in vegetative phase of ontogenetic development of plants did not always correspond with the classification of cultivars based on long term experiments carried out during the whole vegetation period.
