Transfer of Highland Oilseeds Technologies
1992
Adugna Haile
To verify and disseminate available production technologies, on-farm trials and demonstrations were conducted in some rapeseed, mustard and linseed producing areas. The trials were conducted as improved and farmers' methods during 1985 and 1986. Improved and local cultivars of mustard and linseed were tested under both improved and farmer management practices. In potential mustard-producing areas, S-67, Pura and the local check gave mean yields of 17.8, 9.2 and 9.7 q/ha under the improved method and 9.5, 3.4 and 8.1 q/ha under farmers' method. In the potential linseed-producing areas varieties CI 1425, CI 1652 and the local check gave mean yields of 8.1, 8.8 and 7.6 q/ha, respectively. The on-farm trials on rapeseed, mustard and linseed showed that the improved management is very important to obtain higher seed yield. Following these trials, demonstration of mustard and linseed production technologies were being conducted in the central zone since 1987. The results showed that S-67 with its recommended packages gave a mean yield of 15.5 q/ha an advantage of 6.5 q/ha. Similarly, the improved variety of linseed gave a mean seed yield of 6.9 q/ha with a mean grain yield advantage of 2.7 q/ha.
