The present investigation was conducted in order to evaluate the possibility of isolating promising wheat (T. aestivum L. Thell) crosses on the basis of their yields in the F1 and F2 generations and to determine the value of the performance index P in predicting heritability. Thirty crosses: 21 with "Mykonos" and 9 with "Lesvos" as common parents were included in this study. "Mykonos" one of the two varieties had the better combining ability. Thirteen crosses with "Mykonos" and five with "Lesvos" as common parents had the highest performance index and did not differ significantly from each other. In F2 generation five "Mykonos" crosses and one "Lesvos" cross outyielded their respective F1's by 3-27 %. The data indicate that high yielding crosses in the F1 and F2 generations are indexes of useful genetic variability which may lead to the isolation of highyielding inbred lines in subsequent generations.
