Marssonina brunnea often causes epidemics to many poplar cultivars in N. Greece. Epidemics culminate in July and August and have as result premature defoliation and signifficant reduction in diameter growth. Cultivars "I-262", "I-214", "I-37/51" and X10 may be considered as suscebtible to infection whereas cultivars "I-72/58", X34 and "I-77/51" resistant. The disease can be successfully controlled in N. Greece by 3 applications of DITHANE M45 performed in May-June. The wide cultivation of the above resistant cultivars should be encouraged whereas the male clone "I-262" should be used only in recreation areas, parks,etc.
