The effect of nitrogen application on yield and protein content of corn (Zea mays L.)

Field experiments were conducted at three locations (Thessaloniki, N. Zoe, Serres), in order to study the time effect of N application on maize grain yield and protein content. Nitrogen was applied in four levels (100, 200, 300, 400 kg N/ha) as follows: (a). All the N during the seed planting (b). One half during planting and the remaining as side-dressing at 50-60 cm plant height (c). One half during planting, one fourth at 50-60 cm plant height and one fourth at the flowering stage. The levels of 300 and 400 kg N/ha gave the highest grain yield at Thessaloniki, Serres (1982), and Serres (1983) locations, while for the N. Zoe location, all the levels of N-application gave the same grain yield. Furthermore, the levels of 300 and 400 kg N/ha gave the highest grain protein content at N. Zoe, Serres (1982), Serres (1983) locations. At Serres location, the time application (a), for the average of the rates of nitrogen gave lower yield than the other two time applications (b,c). At Thessaloniki and N. Zoe locations, the three time applications gave the same grain yield. As for the protein content of grain at Thessaloniki and Serres (1982) locations, the time application (a) gave lower content than the other two time applications (b,c), while at Serres (1983) and N. Zoe locations there were not significant differences among the three N time applications. The interaction between the levels of nitrogen and the time application was not significant for both grain yield and protein content.
