Correlations between certain yield components and the grain yield in maize S2 families and their hybrids.

The yield components and grain yield of 18 S2 families developed from pioneer hybrid 3925 SC and of hybrids produced from these with non-related testers were investigated for the following traits: ear length, ear diameter, number of kernel rows, number of kernels per row, kernel length, thousand kernel weight, grain yield. It would seem that selection for yield components (especially ear length, kernel length and number of kernels per row) facilitates the development of lines with greater yield potential, but this does not lead directly to an increase in the grain yield of hybrids. The reliability of the correlation between the grain yield of the test crosses and the S2 parents may change as a function of testers and year. The correlation coefficients indicative of the closeness of the correlation between the yield components of the hybrids developed on the 2 testers were found to be correlated with the MQ values of the "A" factor (S2) referring to the same trait and of the A x B (S2 x tester) interaction, resp. The greater the MQ value, the greater the correlation coefficient.
