Integrating cattle in farming systems on upland red yellow podzolic soils, South Sumatra (Indonesia)

Linear programming technique was employed to obtain optimal solution that includes number of cattle to produce 5 tons of dung per-year. Based on integrated farming systems research data from 1980 through 1984 and the Estate Crops Directorate data, it was found that the number of cattle that should be integrated in the food-estate crops "PIR" system, was 3 goats and 7 lambs and 1 cow more than one year old. While in the system without "PIR" component there were 2 goats, 4 lambs, 1 cow and 1 calf of less than one year old. Furthermore, it was identified that at the optimal solution family male labour availability was a constraint, especially at the first season (October-December). The shadow price of male labour in the period was highest compared with wage rate. Hence it is profitable to hire ones.
