Agroforestry on forest land in Java (Indonesia)
1990
Bratamihardja, M. (Perum PERHUTANI Indonesia Forest State Corporation, Jakarta (Indonesia))
The Indonesian Forest State corporation (Perum PERHUTANI) has about 3 million ha of state forest land in Java and Madura. The low level of socio-economic conditions of the people as a result of over-population in Java and Madura (+- 775 people/square km) has caused increased pressure on the forest land utilization. That is why the Perum PERHUTANI has been practising the "tumpangsari (taungya)" system since 1972. In order to utilize efficiently the limited forest land in Java and Madura, the Perum PERHUTANI aside from the tumpangsari system has developed a new technique of "full rotation agroforestry" (FRA), wherein a long duration of crop rotation is combined with multipurpose tree species.
