Studies on major pests of dried cassava and their control

Coffee bean weevil, Araecerus fasciculatus (De Geer) (Coleoptera: Anthribidae) is the most important major pest of dried cassava in Indonesia. Three other species i.e. lesser grain borer, Rhizopertha dominica (F.) Col.: Bostrichidae, rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Col. Curculionidae) and flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.) (Col.: Tenebrionidae) are among others infesting the foodstuff in the Special Territory of Yogyakarta. These species were able to cause great losses of dried cassava in the territory. Pest control has not really been done by the farmers or the stockholders. So far some of the farmers have applied a traditional method of control by spraying the dried cassava with chili juice, although it did not affect the pest infestation. The possible use of carbon bisulfide (CS2) was demonstrated in 1968 and it was continued in 1969/1970. Laboratory trials and field tests indicated that fumigation with CS2 at the rate of 30-40 cc per cubic meter of storage may cause total mortality of insect pests during 48 hours.
