Implication and prospect of agroforestry in West Sumatra (Indonesia)
1990
Djalal, M. (Universitas Andalas, Padang (Indonesia). Fakultas Pertanian)
The province of West Sumatra is located on the Bukit Barisan mountain range and the greater part of the area is hilly. Since this region has very limited area for intensive agriculture and for forestry, its sloped or steep-sloped area should be considered for agriculture development in the future. The local farmers have been practising the traditional agroforestry concept without ecological considerations. It should be improved in accordance with agricultural development, otherwise the down-stream areas (Riau and Jambi province) will have more sedimentation problems. The establishment of action research Centers in this region will be important and meaningful to encouraging local farmers to improve their traditional agroforestry systems not only for its socio-economic advantages but also in its ecological aspects.
