Properties of Pseudomonas syringae pv. lachrymans (Smith and Bryan) Carsner, the causal agent of angular leaf spot of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) from Jordan

Thirty different bacterial isolates, obtained from diseased cucumber plants from different cucumber growing areas in Jordan under plastic houses and tunnels, were biochemically, nutritionally and pathogenetically tested for the angular leaf spot disease. The results indicated that the causal organisms of angular leaf spot of cucumber was Pseudomonas syringae pv. Lachrymans (Smith and Bryan) Carsner. Artificial inoculation of 18 different cucurbit cultivars revealed that the following ten cucurbit cultivars were highly susceptible to the disease: Citrulus vulgaris cv. "Crimson sweet", Citrulus vulgaris cv. "Charleston gray", Citrulus vulgaris cv. "sugar baby"; Cucumis melo ev. "ananas", Cucumis melo ev. "honey dew"; Cucumis sativus cv. "rahma"; Cucurbita pepo cv. "constol", Cucurbita pepo cv. "regina", Cucurbita pepo cv. "corona" and Lagenaria siceraria. However, the four cultivars Cucumis melo cv. "honey dew (F1) hybrid", Cucumis melo cv. "amco sweet"; Cucurbita pepo cv. "victoria" and Cucurbita pepo cv. "zucchini" were found to be less susceptable; whereas Cucumis melo cv. "anjar choice", Cucumis melo cv. "rock melon", Cucurbita pepo cv. "Clarbella" and Cucurbita maxima were found to be resistant to the bacterium. The above susceptible and less susceptible cultivars could bring a new dimension to the epidemic of the disease, and could be considered as new hosts for this disease
