A study of public opinions regarding forests and forestry in Tottori prefecture [Japan], 1: Forest resources

The public opinions regarding forest resources in Tottori prefecture are investigated. The results showed that many people requested that the present level should be maintained for forests in Tottori prefecture. Many people were very aware of the difference between natural and artificially grown forests. Opinions on the ratio of natural compared with artificial forests varied ranging from "Present proportion should be maintained" (37%) to "Artificial forests should be increased" (25%), and "Natural forests should be increased" (24%). There were many asserting that natural forests should be for the benefit of the public. Many see artificially grown forests as only for supplying lumber. Many people recognized the necessity of taking care of artificial forests. Only a few insisted that the owners of forests should assume responsibility for making and taking care of forests
