Akihomare was bred at the Fukui Agricultural Experiment Station, and was released in Akita prefecture as a recommended cultivar in 1981. The agricultural characteristics of Akihomare are as follows: 1) Akihomare belongs to the later subset of the medium-maturing group. The plant type is a panicle-number type with a medium long culm. Its grain quality is better than that of Toyonishiki or Sasanishiki, and the grain quality is stable. 2) the number of kernels per panicle is not sufficient owing to the short panicle length; however, its yield potential is higher than that of Toyonishiki in the south plain fields in Akita prefecture, because of an increasing number of panicles and good ripening. 3) Resistance to lodging is evidently superior to that of Sasanishiki but inferior to that of Toyonishiki. 4) Eating quality is evidently superior to that of Toyonishiki and equal to that of Sasanishiki. 5) Resistance to blast disease in leaf infection is equal to that of Sasanishiki, and in neck infection is superior to that of Sasanishiki and Kiyonishiki but slightly inferior to that of Toyonishiki. 6) Although initial rooting ability under low temperature is slightly inferior to that of Toyonishiki and Sasanishiki, resistance to cool-summer damage due to floral impotence is superior to that of Toyonishiki and Sasanishiki
