Genetic analysis of blood protein variations on the population of Berkshire breed in Kagoshima prefecture [Japan]

Total 50 blood samples were collected from Berkshire breed raised in Kagoshima region of Japan in order to clarify the gene constitution in the population of these pigs. The genetic variation of blood proteins encoded by 22 loci was analyzed by means of starch gel electrophoresis. Out of 22 loci examined in the present experiment, the Pa, Tf, Hp, Am-1, 6 PGD, PHI, PGM and EsD loci showed polymorphism. With regard to the comparison of gene frequencies fat four serum protein loci of two Berkshire populations of Kagoshima in the present data and Kanto region already published by Oishi et al. (1970), the PP-1F and Hp-2 alleles presented in Berkshire breed of Kanto were not found in that of Kagoshima, while the Hp-3 allele was found only in the present work. Moreover, although in the gene frequencies of the Pa and Tf loci there were some differences between populations of both regions, the Am-I locus showed almost the same frequencies. However, the gene frequencies of the Pa, Hp and 6 PGD loci of Berkshire breed in Kagoshima were clearly different from those of the other European-American breeds. Especially, the frequency of Hp-1 allele was the highest in Berkshire breed, and the 6 PGD locus in Berkshire was more polymorphic than those in the other breeds
