The evaluation of the diets formulated to fit for Kyushu district in Japan

A study was carried out using facilities attached to four different poultry research stations of different prefectures in Kyushu district in Japan to compare the following two practical layer diets which were formulated to fit the environment of this district with the usual commercial diet (CP 17%, ME 2800 kcal/kg) and the diet formulated in accordance with Japanese standard (CP 15%, ME 2750 kcal/kg): energy supplemented test diet (CP 15%, ME 2850 kcal/kg) and protein supplemented test diet (CP 20%, ME 2750 kcal/kg). The experiments were repeated two times to observe the seasonal effect; the first experiments started in December 1985 and the second experiments started in June 1986. The hens (White Leghorn) were 20 weeks old when the experiments were set up. Three poultry houses used in the present investigation were open-sided and the remaining one house was windowless. The hens were assigned to four dietary of groups and were kept to the respective experimental diet and libitum throughout 48 weeks experimental period in each poultry house. The experimental period was divided into 3 stages to observe the influence of laying stage. Metabolizable energy intake was higher in the group fed with the diet of high ME content than of those fed with the diet of low ME content when the hens were reared in the open-sided houses. Crude protein intake was higher in the group fed the diet of high CP content. Egg production rate and total amount of eggs produced were higher when the hens were given 17% or 20% CP diet than those given 15% CP diet, and this was statistically significant in hens at the descending stage of egg production in summer. Energy supplementation improved the production rate and the total production of eggs at the descending stage in winter
