Survey of some avian viruses causing diseases in village chickens in the suburbs of Jakarta

A serological survey was performed for the detection of antibody against some viruses causing poultry disease in village chickens raised in the Tangerang district which is located in about fifty kilometer west of Jakarta city, the capital of the Republic of Indonesia. All the chickens surveyed were only vaccinated with the Newcastle disease (ND) live virus vaccine. They were kept in barns as a flock. The number of chickens in each flock ranged from 25 to 100 in eight farms. Tests were carried out on ND virus (NDV, hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test), Marek's disease virus (MDV, indirect fluorescent antibody technique), infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV, double immunodiffusion method), infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV, double immunodiffusion method), and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method). HI test against NDV revealed a range of ND HI titer (geometric mean titer) from 10 to 100 in eight flocks. In some chickens the titer was less than 5 in spite of vaccination with NDV La Sota strain. Antibodies against MDV or ILTV were detected in 4 flocks, while gel diffusion antibodies against IBDV were found in only one chicken. The ratio of chickens with a positive reaction for each antibody was 11/67(16%) against MDV, 8/68(12%) against ILTV, and 1.75(1%) against IBDV, respectively, ELISA antibodies against IBV were detected in each flock in 8 farms
