Flutriafol - a new fungicide for the control of vascular streak dieback in cocoa

Vascular streak dieback (VSD) caused by Oncobasidium theobromae Talbot and Keane remained the most destructive disease of cocoa in Malaysia and other countries in this region. Its epidemiology and systemic infection made VSD control difficult. Flutriafol, highly active systemic triazole fungicide, has been extensively evaluated for the control of VSD in nursery and field planted cocoa in West and East Malaysia. In nursery cocoa, results revealed that fortnightly prophylactic foliar sprays of flutriafol at 100-200 ppm gave good control of VSD under low disease pressure. Under high disease pressure, the systemic property of flutriafol could be exploited to give prolonged protection to the rapidly growing plants. Monthly soil drench applications with flutriafol at 5-15 mg a.i./plant gave excellent control of the disease under such conditions. In newly transplanted cocoa, monthly soil drench with flutriafol at 25-50 mg a.i./plant was also effective in controlling the disease. Flutriafol had demonstrated curative effects against the pathogen in nursery cocoa. Flutriafol at 5-10 mg a.i./plant, applied as soil drench treatments at monthly intervals, significantly reduced disease incidence in plants which were exposed up to 18 weeks under high disease pressure. In field cocoa, preliminary results showed that monthly soil drench applications with flutriafol at 50-100 mg a.i./plant demonstrated curative effects on plants exposed to 3 months of natural infection.
