A comparative evaluation of triadimenol with tebuconazole, a new fungicide for the control of vsd [vascular streak dieback] of cocoa in Malaysia

The present commercial plantings of cocoa in Malaysia are variously susceptible to the most serious fungal disease, the vascular streak dieback (VSD). Triadimenol and, to a lesser extent, bitertanol are currently used for VSD control in nurseries and young field-plantings. Another similar compound, tebuconazole, was recently extensively evaluated in 1988/89 and the results are herein reported. Tebuconazole is a systemic, sterol biosynthesis-inhibiting, triazol fungicide active against numerous economically important diseases of crops grown not only in the temperature, but also in the sub-tropic and tropical regions. Prophylactic foliar spray applications of tebuconazole in the nurseries at 625 ul/1 at 7 and 14 day intervals were effective, providing complete protection, with no observed phytotoxicity during the 6 months observation. At a similar rate and applied at 7 day intervals, triadimenol provided 93-98 percent protection. At 1250 ul/1 and applied at 14 day intervals, triadimenol provided complete protection. Soil-drenching of tebuconazole on nursery plants at monthly intervals of 5 to 10 mg a.i. per plant provided 97 percent protection and triadimenol provided 100 percent protection after 6 applications. In young field-plantings, both tebuconazole and triadimenol, when foliar-applied at 12500 ul/1 at 14 day intervals provided efficacy of about 95 percent without phytotoxic effect.
