Wood breakdown in mangrove ecosystems: A review
1993
Cragg, S.M. (Forest Products Research Centre, Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea))
A high proportion of standing biomass in mangrove swamps consists of wood with a lifespan and residence/time as litter that is much greater than leaves. Mangroves are subject to attack by terrestial organisms and marine life but are protected by chemical and physical mechanisms. Marine organisms which exploit mangroves include Ascomytete fungi, teredind molluscs, isopod crustaceans and possibly bacteria. The input of wood litter in a mature mangrove swamp is a constant though often locally patchy
