Selenium content of selected varieties of onion (Allium spp.)

This study was conducted to determine the selenium content of three varieties of onion namely: Red Bulb, Red Creole, and Yellow Granex. The plants were collected from two different sites, Licaong (A) and Magtanggol (B), Munoz, Nueva Ecija [Philippines]. Two methods of analysis were done: the qualitative test, and quantitative analysis using colorimetric method. The results of the study showed that the three varieties of onion from the two sites contained selenium. Their ability to accumulate selenium differed. Red Creole had the highest selenium content with 23.30 and 21-68 ppb from sites A and B respectively followed by Red Bulb with 20.06 and 20-43 ppb and Yellow Granex with 14.43 and 14.49 ppb, respectively. Selenium deficiency in crop plants ranges from 9 to 35 ppb. Based on the results of this study, the three varieties of onions are within the deficiency range. Moderate use of onion as spice in food is not harmful.
