The model experiments showed the following adverse changes in soil chemical properties as the result of S contamination: a decline in soil pH, an increase of mobile Al and a decrease in sorption complex saturation with bases. Acid rain was found to be much more potent in this respect than elementary S contamination. Liming the S-contaminated soil failed to counteract the acidification process. The migration of sulphate ions increased the migration of bases, especially Ca, Mg and K ions
