The impact of phytopagous insects on Striga hermonthica was assessed in Burkina Faso. In 1988 and 1989 experiments were conducted at Dedougou and Ouahigouya in sorghum and millet fields infestated by S. hermonthica. In each plot of a randomized block design with two treatments (five replicates), the biomass, dry matter and number of Striga seeds were recorded. Plants were sprayed with Basudin 600 C.E. (diazinon) every 10 days to lower the insect population. A significant reduction in biomass and seed number was observed in treated compared to the check plots. Survey was carried out concurrently at Kaya, Ouahigouya, Dedougou, Logobou, Diebougou, Gaoua, Koupela, Kamboinse, Orodara, and Douna. Nineteen genera of insects (representing 17 families) were observed on the witchweed among which, Smicronyx spp., Lema sp., Lagria sp., Myllabris sp., Aspavia armigera F., Poophilus costalis Walker, and Junomia sp were common
