Literature on the effect of soil conditions on the development of the parasitic weed Striga is reviewed. A direct relationship between soil structre and Striga infestation has not irrefutably been demonstrated. Possibly, soil structure plays an indirect role, for example via moisture content and the occurrence of micro-organisms. There are strong indications that nitrogen brings about an effect on Striga. However, much more detailed chemical soil analyses in a direct relationship with Striga are needed. In general, it has been shown that a high soil moisture content is unfavourable for Striga development. It is concluded that much basic research is needed, both in the laboratory and in the field, for a clearer understanding of the responses of the parasite to different soil conditions
