Hybrid triticale: Present and future

Since 1981, five cytoplasms have been successfully transferred to triticale, namely Aegilops ovata, Ae. juvanalis, Ae. sharonensis, Triticum timopheevi, and Ae. heldreichi. During 1981-89 more than 60 cytoplasmic male sterile lines have been and are being developed. The best male sterile system in triticale is in two cytoplasms: T. timopheevi, and Ae. sharonensis. These cytoplasms do not have specific effects on various triticale characters. Cytoplasm from Ae. ovata causes heading delay and poor seed development. Plants with Ae. juvanalis, and Ae. heldreichi cytoplasms are a few days earlier and have poorer seed development. Two restores were identified for Ae. sharonensis cytoplasm, and one for Ae. juvanalis cytoplasm. In 1989, 12 hybrid triticales were evaluated in one location. Most of the F1 hybrids showed satisfactory fertility. No heterosis effect for yield was observed for the hybrids with Ae. juvanalis cytoplasm. One hybrid with Ae. sharonensis cytoplasm outyielded check variety Lasko by 20 percent
