Five Vicia faba cultivars were screened for resistance/susceptibility to Orobanche crenata. A new index based on the inclination of the host to be infected with O. crenata, the ability of O. crenata to complete its life cycle to produce seeds on the host and the losses in the host yield is suggested to assess resistance/susceptibility of V. faba cultivars to O. crenata infection. By applying such index the tested cultivars could be classified as tolerant (Giza 402), susceptible (Giza 3) and highly susceptible (Roumy, Reina blanco and Sevilla giant). The correlation between tillers of faba bean plant and Orobanche number/faba bean plant was positively significant
