Production and marketing of baby corn in Thailand

On production side, technology applied by farmers in Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon was different, e.g. time and methods of land preparation, watering, looking after plants and varieties of seeds. Under the existing marketing system, few middlemen are located at each local and provincial wholesale and export levels. Certainly, the quality of produces transacted in the market is different. Among middlemen at the same market level, they have to compete against others in purchasing baby corn by providing transportation means and credit facilities to farmers/producers. In general, it is not difficult for new merchants to enter the markets if they have sufficient money capital and good experience in classifying quality and standard of baby corn. The factors affecting quantity of baby corn purchased by middlemen are seasons, food processing plants buying prices, and purchasing orders received from foreign markets. From statistical testing results, all farmer were price takers. Furthemore, more or less 90 % of them got low yield of baby corn and approximately 70 % took long time for harvesting. About one half of farmers use poor variety of seeds. On marketing side, about 80 % of local assemblers had bargaining power in price determination, and 60 % had uncertain quantity of baby corn purchased. Approximately, 65 % of food processing plants had problems of low quality and exporters had problem of limited air space and high air freight.
