Phlai, Zingiber cassumunar Roxb., have long been used as Thai traditional drugs, and well known for its antiinflammatory, antidysentery and oxytocin properties oil had been studies and reported for its chemical components by research groups from Stange Canada Ltd. and Tropical Products Institute, London, since 1970, 1971 and 1975. Phlai oil has been pharmacologically studied by TISTR in order to prove or disprove its real therapeutic properties, for antiinflammatory properties since 1975, and for its spermicidal effect since 1981. The antiinflammatory study, by employing Hind Paw Oedema Technique, described by W.G. Spector and D.A. Willoughby, had confirmed that the straight oil of Phlai indicated positive result, while its 4 subfractions indicated negative effect. A phlai cream preparation has been developed for clinical study, the preliminary result had confirmed its antiinflammatory property without undesirable side effects.
