Effect of three disinfectants on a duck strain of Pasteurella Multocida

Effect of three disinfectants on Pasteurella multocida serotype 8 A, a duck strain, was determined. By using a high inoculum (10(exp.9)-10(exp.10) cells/ml.), the experiments were conducted in normal saline (clean condition) and in saline with 10 % calf serum (dirty condition), pH 7.0 at temperature 28 +- 1 deg. celsius. Lowest concentrations of iodine solution, benzalkonium chloride and calcium hypochlorite that killed the organism within 2.5 minutes under clean condition were 0.00015 %, 0.0025 % and 0.0005 % respectively. The concentrations of these disinfectants were increased to 0.004 %, 0.015 %, and 0.03 % respectively in ordered to kill the organism under dirty condition at the same duration. Under tested conditions, iodine is the most effective disinfectant against P. multocida.
