Study on the effect of different planting dates of groundnut in corn-groundnut intercropping

Corn yield in intercropping was unaffected by different planting dates of groundnut, whereas groundnut yield in intercropping was greatly affected. Groundnut yield markedly reduced when the crop was sown after corn. Groundnut in -14 day treatment produced the highest yield followed by the -7 day treatment. Yields of groundnut in the -14, -7, 0, 7 and 14 day treatments were 792, 736, 693, 185 and 162 kg/ha., respectively. A decrease in yield of groundnut when planted after corn was mainly due to shading effect. All intercrop yields of both corn and groundnut were less than those of sole cropping. However, the reduction in yield of corn in all treatments and in yield of groundnut in the -14 and -7 day treatments were less than the proportion of decreasing plant populations. The LERs of the -14, -7 and 0 day treatments were more than 1.00 which indicated that these treatments had yield advantages over sole cropping. The LERs for intercrop yield of the -14, -7, 0, 7 and 14 day treatments were 1.13, 1.10, 1.04, 0.67 and 0.65, respectively.
