Progress report: Mycotoxins and their controls in corn and other cergals

Microorganisms were evaluated for inhibition of mycelial grwoth of Aspergillus flavus on PDA, 32 isolates of bacteria and 2 isolates of yeasts showed antagonistic performances. Bacterial isolate number 144 inhibited the growth of A. flavus by 42.60 % at 12 days whereas bacterial isolates number 88 and 83 could inhibit by 41.74 % and 41.16 %, respectively. For yeast, isolate number 1 was the most effective with 23.60 % of inhibition. The antisera have been bled from each injected rabbit for 7 times. The rabbits look healthy and more antisera collections are expected to be performed until the end of August, 1988. Further work will be the selection of a good quality of antiserum aganinst all 3 antigens and the study on serological detection methods for those three Aspergillus isolates. Aspergillus flavus was found at 0.53 and 0.45 % from maize kernels treated with those two concentrations, whereas aflatoxin detected were 6.17 and 6.33 ppb, respectively. For maize kernels with 22 % mc, A. flavus was found at 0.37 and 0.37 % whereas 7.67 and 9.50 ppb of aflatoxin were detected on kernels treated with 150 and 250 ppb of benomy1, respectively. For untreated kernels A. flavus was found at 55.58 and 63.25 % whereas 58.33 and 98.33 ppb of aflatoxin detected respectively. In this study moisture contents of both treated and untreated kernels tended to decrease.
