The effects of adding buffer (NaHCO3) to high yielding cows has been investigated using 62 Holstein-Friesian animals receiving 200 g of NaHCO3 per head a day. Out of the total quantity of consumed dry matter in ration, 50,65 originated from roughages and 49.35 from concentrate mixture. In relation to dry matter, the fibre content amounted to 17.58 per cent. In the control period the average daily milk production amounted to 26.94 kg with 2.37 per cent of butterfat, while in the experimental period the corresponding figures were 25.18 kg of milk and 2.78 per cent of butterfat. The milk production was lower by 1.76 kg while the percentage of butterfat was raised by 0.41 percentage units. Daily fat corrected milk (FCM) amounted in the control period to 20.35 kg and in the experimental period to 20.57 kg. By using NaHCO3 the increase of FCM was 0.22 kg per cow a day, the difference being statistically significant (P0.05). The production of butterfat per cow a day in the control period was 0. 638 kg, and in the experimental period 0.700 kg. By using NaHCO3 the daily increase of butterfat achieved was 0.062 kg or 9.72, but that difference was statistically significant (P0.05).
