An experiment was carried out in petridishes to study the salinity effect on the germination, seedling response and water content of shoot in jute (CVL-1 and O-9897), mesta (HS-24) and kenaf (HC-2) cultivars. Seeds were treated with deionised water (control), 1000, 4000 and 8000 ppm of Nacl. Rate of germination and seedling emergence were higher at lower concentration than at higher concentration. The water contents of jute, mesta and kenaf were highest in control and decreased with increasing salinity. Total dry weight and length of root and shoot were significantly affected by salt treatments.
