Forest tree improvement, unlike agricultural crops requires long time for results from test and selection due to its longer generation time. The techniques like early progeny testing in the nursery, Juvenile-mature, nursery-field and age-age (specific) correlations for predicting adult tree performance, clonal testing as compact operation along with field progeny testing for accelerated generation turnover has been proposed in accelerated tree improvement strategy. The role of tree improvement, criteria of selection, the importance and significant role of above techniques for accelerated improvement, advantages of their using in tropical and subtropical conditions and special progeny testing design with maximum mating capabilities are described. The goal of a tree improvement programme is to obtain maximum gain in advanced generation orchards and to provide per unit of time sufficient improved seeds capable of producing greater quantity and quality timber per unit area. Through conventional progeny testing method, it takes long time or half of rotation period of a species. By using the above mentioned techniques the proposed strategy substantially accelerate tree improvement programme by obtaining such genetic gain even in first generation orchards and hence instead of half rotation of a species, maximum gain would be possible to obtain in one third of its rotation period. The proposed strategy is goal oriented and comprises a number of supportive research activities.
