[Optimization of a pilot activated sludge plant treating the effluent of a pulp and paper mill using the deinking process [while minimizing the addition of phosphorus]]

During the study the BOD5/P ratio was set successively at 100/1.0, 100/0.5, 100/0.3 and 100/0.1, and the sludge retention time at 10, 15, 20 and 30 days. Supplementary removal of phosphorus by the addition of coagulant was also considered in a preliminary study. The greatest efficiency was obtained with a mean BOD5/P ratio of 100/0.70 and 100/0.64 and a mean sludge age of 16 days. The addition of 200 mg/l of alum to samples of the effluent of the pilot plant decreased phosphorus concentration below the 0.23 mg/l level required by the Quebec Ministry of environment. This last experience was conducted in beakers as a jar test.
