The paper describes the evaluation of a decision support system for the management of the irrigation schedule (DMIS) at field level of medium and large scale irrigation schemes, in terms of: (i) validation of the Improved Field Capacity Concept (IFCC) model used for the simulation of the soil water profile; (ii) verification of the management functions integrated in DMIS; and (iii) identification of the applicability and suitability of DMIS for use in large scale irrigation schemes. The DMIS was implemented to the co-operative irrigation scheme of Kinrooi (Belgium), where five pilot parcels have been monitored during the growing season 1991. Comparison of the observed with the simulated time-course of the soil water profile, revealed that the IFCC model is capable of simulating accurately the average soil water content of the crop root zone. The results further indicate that DMIS is an effective tool suitable for the management of the parcel-based irrigation schedule of medium to large scale irrigation schemes.
