[Evaluation of nine cultivars of broad beans (Vicia faba L.) for fresh market]

Seven cultivars of broad beans (Vicia faba L.) were evaluated during the 1991-1992 season. The objective was to find a better cultivar for fresh market in yield and agronomic characteristics than the one used today in the country (national Agua Dulce broad bean). Characteristics of growth and development of the different cultivars were also studied. The cultivars evaluated were Muchamiel A, Muchamiel B, Talia, Bianka, Aguadulce Royal Sluis, Aguadulce Vilmorin and a national Aguadulce broad bean. The trial was arranged according to a randomized complete block design with five replications. The abscission percentage of reproductive elements determined through the number of flowers and pods per reproductive node was of 93,1% on the average. The cultivars evaluated were classified in three groups according to the size of their green-stage grains. The Aguadulce cultivars produced large size, the Muchamiel medium size and Bianka and Talia small size grains. The cultivars which produced large size grains showed a greater yield than the small size grain cultivars. In fact, the Aguadulce and Muchamiel A cultivars had the best pods and grain yields, showing significant differences with Bianka and Talia. No significant differences were found among the Aguadulce cultivars in yield, growth, and development characteristics. Neither there were statistical differences in yield between the medium size grain cultivars nor between the small grain ones. However, the cultivars Muchamiel A and Talia were outstanding in yield in their respective categories of grain size. The Royal Sluis Vilmorin Aguadulce cultivars showed a concentrated production, needing only two harvest. This situation contrasted with the cultivars Muchamiel B and Talia, which required four harvests
