A set theoretic view of growth component estimation with successive variable-radius-plot samples

By recognizing the mutually exclusive subsets of trees constituting a forest population over some interval of time, the relationship of an estimator of growth to its targeted value is made clear. Estimators are investigated in this light, and expressions of their variances are derived. A newly proposed ratio estimator to ensure compatible growth estimators is discussed, and recent developments of potential interest are presented
