Bovine sarcocystosis in Estonia
1993
Miller, I.
The spread of bovine sarcocystosis in Estonia was studied in 1982-1990. The total number of cattle examined is 2,892, among them 1,418 milking cows and 1,474 young animals below two years of age in 13 districts of Estonia. The samples taken either from the line between the right atrium and ventricle or the apex of the heart were collected at Meat Processing Plants. The compression method was used to examine 28 slices of muscle from each sample. Of 2,892 animals examined sarcocysts were found in 1,537 with the invasion extent (IE) of 53.1%. The average invasion intensity (II) was 64.2 sarcocysts per one gram of muscle tissue (10 - 880 sarcocysts per one gram of muscle tissue). Severe infection was noted in North-East Estonia and in some Eastern districts. Of 1,418 cows examined 818 were infected with sarcocysts - 57.7%. The invasion intensity was 10 - 720, on the average, 66.3 sarcocysts per one gram of muscle tissue. The number of heifers studied was 1,474, of whom 719 or 49.0% proved to be invaded by sarcocysts
