Galium weed species in wheat fields of Greece: spread, severity and effect on yield.

A survey of 116 wheat fields located in Viotia, Thessalia and Thraki was conducted in May and June 1982. Galium spp. were generally found in a small number of fields and usually at densities lower than 20 plants/m d(exp 2). In these locations, Galium spp. are a serious weed problem. The prevailing species was G. spurium L., usually alone but sometimes together with G. tricornutum Dandy. In wheat fields, G. aparine L. was very rarely found. The correlation between wheat yield and G. spurium density was determined by sample harvesting from selected fields in Kopaida during 1981 and 1982. Forty G. spurium plants/m d(exp 2) are expected to cause a yield reduction of 5.2-20.6%. Yield reduction can mostly be accounted for by wheat tillering reduction.
