Function of the endogenous rhythm of floral secretion in the pollination of sweet cherry varieties

In Hungary the average yield of sweet cherries per tree is only 16 kg, as compared with 20-30 kg in other countries. Therefore, flower biological and periodicity studies were carried out in the field to determine what the sweet cherry flower has to offer in the interests of the indispensable open pollination, what type of pollinators it hopes for and how it attracts then during various phases of flowering. The protogynous flower development, the state of the pollination chamber, the endogenous rhythm of nectar production (attracting insects at dusk and dawn), the white petals and the night opening of a large mass of flowers all indicate that the pollination of sweet cherry flowers is carried out to a decisive extent by the wind and wild insects, while the role of bees is negligible. If the fluctuations in yield are to be eliminated, these biological factors should be taken into consideration when designing variety associations. Pollinating partners should be planted by the beginning of flowering
