The winter barley variety Kompolti korai was treated with 100 kg/ha P2O5 and 120 kg/ha K2O, while N fertilizer was distributed at rates of 40, 60, 80 and 100 kg/ha in autumn, or 40 kg/ha in autumn with 20, 40, 60 and 80 kg/ha as top-dressing in spring. Factor analysis and stepwise regression analysis were used to evaluate the results. In the first factor analysis model the effect of total N treatment was observed on yield components, plant height and crude protein content, in the second model amino acid analyses were also made. In the stepwise regression model the yield of winter barley was the dependent variable, while the yield components of winter barley were the independent variables. On the basis of the equation describing the relationships it can be concluded that a 1 kg increase in the N rate led to a 13 kg increase in the average yield of winter barley
