Effect of P deficiency and the elimination of its consequences in peppermint

The effect of deficient supplies of P was examined in a pot experiment on the experimental variety T-81 of peppermint (Mentha piperita L.), grown on 400 ha in Hungary. Peppermint responded to P deficiency within a month of planting. Deficiency symptoms first appeared on the lower leaves, gradually spreading towards the upper part of the stem. Growth slowed down and the leaf veins, and later the lamellae, showed anthocyanine discoloration. In time the leaves became dark purple and finally brown. The stem gradually became bare. The plant height was 20.7 % less than the control in the first growth and 54.1 % less in the second. The volatile oil content decreased by 74.8 % and 21.6 %. As the result of P treatment after all the deficiency symptoms had developed, intense side-shoot formation was observed by the 8-10th day. The yield increased by 142.5 % (herba) and 172.6 % (folium) and the volatile oil content by 32 %. The consequences of severe P deficiency can successfully be corrected within the growing season
