Microscopic fungi causing core infection in hazelnut, Corylus avellana L.

During the processing of hazelnut, infected nuts were examined which had lost their natural colour and glitter, and had become dull and pale. In the cracked hazelnuts the kernel had a characteristic mouldy smell and on its surface the mycelia of the pathogenic fungi were clearly visible. Eleven species of such pathogenic fungi were isolated from hazelnuts, among which most frequent were Alternaria consortiale, Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium cyclopodium. Pathogenity tests proved the high disease causing ability of the fungi, both in intact and out kernels. The ratio of diseased but developed nuts was 6.1 o/o
