Growth and pathogenicity of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides isolated from cacao and rubber

Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is known as causal pathogen of leaf spot, dieback, and of pod rot in cocoa, and leaf fall in rubber. Pathogenicity of C. gloeosporioides isolated from rubber (rubber isolates) has been known. However, the pathogenicity of C. gloeosporioides isolated from cocoa (cocoa isolates) has not been reported. Besides, the ability of cocoa isolates to infect rubber and vice versa has never been determined. In order to determine the growth and pathogenicity of the pathogen an experiment was conducted using three isolates from cocoa and three from rubber. The experiment consisted of observation on growth, sporulation, dimension, and germination of the isolates and re- and cross inoculations of each isolate. The results showed a considerable variation in the growth of colony, sporulation, and dimension of conidia of the isolates. Rubber isolates were able to infect cocoa leaf, whereas cocoa isolates were not able to penetrate rubber leaf. Therefore, it might be considered that the physiological races of cocoa isolates are different from those of rubber isolates.
