The effect of lime and P fertilizer on the growth of Calopogonium caeruleum, 2: Field experiment

Previous results of a greenhouse experiment have shown that the poor growth of C. caeruleum on Podzolic soils is attributed mainly to a low content of available P and to a high level of Al saturation of the soils. Phosphorus application is a pre-requisite for the improvement of plant growth, whereas liming is required for the achievement of the best growth of C. caeruleum. In order to arrive at conclusive results, a field experiment was carried out at Cikopomayak Estate, West Java, on the same soil used for the greenhouse experiment. Five liming rates based on exchangeable Al content of the soil were combined factorially with five P fertilizers rates in a randomized block design. Plant dry weight, nutrient uptake, and chemical properties of the soil were recorded 4, 7, 10, and 12 months after C. caeruleum planting. The results confirmed the findings of greenhouse experiment. In addition, application of a 10.8 tons of lime and 315 kgs of TSP per hectar was required to attain the best growth of C. caeruleum. The results also indicated that critical levels of Al saturation and available P (Olsen P) of the soil for C. caeruleum were 6,8 percent and 7 ppm P respectively
